Job Summary
As a member of the International African American Museum’s (IAAM) Public Programs Department of the Learning & Engagement Division (L&E), the Public Programs Manager will support the development, implementation, documentation, and evaluation of a wide range of public programs. The individual in this position will ensure public programming is educational, engaging, and is aligned with the IAAM’s mission. Primary duties include creating engaging high-quality content and managing Museum programs including virtual and hybrid projects, educational workshops, lectures, etc. Reporting to the Public Historian, the Public Programs Manager will play a key role in helping to manage and execute the IAAM’s calendar of public programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Program Design, Delivery & Evaluation
- In collaboration with Public Historian, contribute to ideation, planning, and implementation of the Museum’s signature public programs and outreach initiatives.
- Contribute to the development of new interactive and immersive programming and strategies to encourage deeper participation in programs that engage new and existing audiences at the IAAM.
- Organize and manage logistics for the planning and execution of public programs and workshops for youth and adult audiences.
- Work in collaboration with other IAAM L&E Divisions to coordinate Museum relevant programs (CFH, K-12 Education, Curatorial, Faith-Based).
- Respond to public and community inquiries regarding programs, volunteer opportunities, and related matters.
- Manage the IAAM Public Programs Calendar, collaborating with the Public Historian to develop a cohesive set of public programs around the Museum’s thematic focus, brand, and messaging.
- Evaluate and assess the effectiveness and impact of programming and outreach efforts to serve the diverse needs of audiences.
- Maintain strong, collaborative relationships with Learning & Engagement Division, Curatorial, Marketing, and other staff across the Museum.
- Work closely with the Public Historian to develop and maintain relationships with the Charleston, national, international public and scholarly communities.
- Develop, create, and distribute comprehensive educational information, as necessary.
- Attends relevant community events and meetings as the IAAM Representative and/or facilitator, as needed.
- Maintain strong professional relationships with community institutions, educators, and agencies to develop new opportunities, ensure program relevance, and forge partnerships.
- Inform and monitor budgets of education programs and services to ensure they are meeting targeted benchmarks.
- Attend and support Museum special events as needed – including evening and weekend events.
- Assist with other Museum duties as assigned by the Public Historian.
- Conduct Museum tours, as necessary.
- Adheres to company policies and procedures, standards and practices, regulatory compliance, and company directives including dress code and attendance
Experience and Qualifications:
- Experience working in Museums, cultural organizations, and/or academic environments.
- Proficiencies in content creation
- Proficiencies in program creation and management
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse audiences to achieve the highest standards in educationally engaging, culturally relevant, and intellectually stimulating program development and delivery.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- An appreciation for and knowledge of African, African American, Charleston, and Lowcountry history and culture. Knowledge of international history and interdisciplinary theory and practice a plus.
- Genuine interest in Museum education and engagement.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-energy environment with hybrid and cross-departmental teams.
- Organized, detail-oriented, and ability to manage multiple projects or initiatives simultaneously.
- Command of Zoom and other virtual meeting and conference platforms for programming purposes.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods standing and walking
- Must be able to work in inclement weather
- Must be able to bend, kneel, squat/stoop to perform tasks.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
