ABOUT BIRTH CENTER EQUITY (BCE)
Birth Center Equity (BCE) was created to make birth center care an option in every community, by 
growing and sustaining birth centers led by Black, Indigenous, and people of color. BCE honors and 
acknowledges the rich and dynamic legacy of Black, Indigenous and people of color birth activism 
and all that is actively happening now. BCE was created to bridge the gap between Black, Indigenous 
and people of color-led birth centers and access to capital. BCE aims to make a unique contribution 
by building a coalition among Black, Indigenous and people of color-led birth centers with the 
express goal of growing and leveraging financial resources for collective growth and 
sustainability. BCE has grown a relationship and values-based network of more than 57 established 
and developing Black, Indigenous and people of color-led birth centers across the country, and 
focuses on investing in Black, Indigenous, people of color-led birth centers to grow and sustain 
community birth infrastructure for generations.
ABOUT BELOVED ECONOMY STUDIO (BEST™)

Early learnings from BCE informed the growth of BCE’s emerging Beloved Economy Studio (BESt™). 
BESt™ aims to ensure every person has access to safe, culturally- reverent midwifery care by 
incubating and investing in community-led birth center business development and management from 
start-up to sustainability. BESt™ will build and launch ambitious
purpose-driven companies that strengthen community birth infrastructure, add value to the birth 
justice ecosystem and generate wealth for our communities. Led by a founding entrepreneurial team, 
BESt™ will develop and serve as a one-stop shop source of human, social, financial, and

built capital resources to support community birth centers. As we expand, we seek a visionary and 
results-oriented Interim Chief Operations Officer (COO) to provide leadership and operational 
oversight.


Position Summary
The Interim Chief Operating Officer (COO) is a critical executive team member responsible for 
ensuring operational excellence, financial sustainability, values-aligned culture creation, and 
programmatic impact. This interim role will help the burgeoning organization assess, create the 
foundational structure and inform a permanent COO position that supports the values, mission and 
vision of the organization while fostering operational excellence.  The Interim COO oversees all 
aspects of daily operations, including people and culture, finance, technology, facilities, and 
program management to support the organization’s mission and strategic objectives. The ideal 
candidate is a strategic thinker, skilled in operational leadership, financial management, and 
organizational development, with an understanding of social change movements.


Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership
●    Ensure alignment of operations with the organization’s mission, vision, and values.
●    Collaborate with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) and board 
of directors to develop and implement the organization’s strategic plan.
●    Provide leadership in operational planning, risk management, and resource distribution.

Operations Management

●    Oversee daily operations, including finance, people and culture, IT, facilities, and 
administration.
●    Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and nonprofit and social enterprise 
best practices.
●    Develop, implement, and refine processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Financial Oversight

●    Work closely with  the finance team to manage budgets, cash flow, and financial performance.
●    Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and resource allocation to ensure the effective 
utilization of funds in support of BCE's strategic objectives.
●    Provide oversight to budget development and management for BCE directors in Narrative 
Strategy, Operations and Impact, Resource Generation/Distribution, and Network Engagement.

●    Work with CSO to oversee development of appropriate budget tracking tools to support all BCE 
current and future programs.
●    Ensure operational and financial alignment between BCE’s nonprofit and business entities.
●    Support fundraising efforts by ensuring operational readiness and resource alignment.
●    Develop financial strategies and reporting systems to sustain growth and impact.
●    Work with CEO to review annual budget and coordinate fundraising goals, reports and progress

Strategic Implementation:

●    Directly manage and provide oversight to the program areas of Operations and Impact, Network 
Engagement, and CEO support staff and Resource Generation.
●    Support implementation of strategic plan (s), initiatives, and programs aligned with BCE's 
mission and goals.
●    Drive execution excellence across all aspects of BCE's operations and initiatives.
●    Provide thought partnership and lend operational expertise to the development of the Beloved 
Economy Studio (BESt).

Team Leadership and Culture

●    Lead and mentor a diverse team of professionals, fostering a culture of safety, abundance, 
liberation, accountability, and collaboration.
●    Develop and implement policies and practices that support employee engagement and development.
●    Ensure a supportive and inclusive work environment that reflects the organization’s values.

Other Duties:

●    Asses current needs, practices and culture and offer written recommendation for leadership 
model
●    Advise the Executive Team on permanent COO position description and duties


QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, 
Public Administration, or a related field preferred.

Experience

●    10+ years of progressively responsible leadership experience in nonprofit management, 
operations, or a related field.
●    Proven success in managing budgets of $5 million or more.
●    Strong track record in financial management, organizational development, and operational 
excellence.

Skills

●    Exceptional leadership and team-building skills.
●    Expertise in financial management, including budgeting and forecasting.
●    Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
●    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
●    Familiarity with nonprofit compliance, governance, and funding models.
●    Strong writing, editing, and verbal skills, including the willingness and ability to 
communicate across a wide range of stakeholders.
●    Knowledge of organizational management, coupled with a deep desire to re-imagine and actively 
transform away from oppressive organizational systems and practices.
●    Understanding the contexts of birth justice and reproductive justice movements and being 
willing to learn more about its history.
●    Experience managing complex projects and competing priorities while maintaining high standards 
of quality and responsiveness.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS

●    Virtual working conditions, majority of working hours on computer tasks

●    Travel is part of BCE’s routine work for team meetings, retreats, or conferences

●    Receptive and expressive language, engaged dialog and resolving difficult conversations are

●    Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Contract or fractional salary commensurate with scale and scope of growing organization and 
candidate skills and experience; salary range based on a FTE of $200,000 annually. A comprehensive 
benefits package is available, including employer-paid health, dental, vision. This is a remote 
position, with required travel 8-10 times annually.
