Job Description

The Director of Youth Ministry at Trinity United Methodist Church ministers to the faith formation of youth from 6th to 12th grade by overseeing all aspects of ministry with youth involved within Trinity’s congregation. This includes selecting, supervising, and training leaders; managing all curriculum, teaching, materials, and resources for faith formation; coordinating facility usage; and budget management. This position will collaborate closely with the Ministries Team at Trinity to seamlessly integrate youth into all facets of church life. This position has budgetary responsibilities.

Primary Responsibilities:

Ministry Development and Management

  • Develop and execute impactful and engaging programming for youth, from 6th to 12th graders.
  • Create and evaluate new ministries while continuously improving existing ones to meet Youth Ministry objectives. 
  • Coordinate and direct special events such as Discovery, Christian View of Sex, Mission Trips, High School Beach Trip, weekend retreats, and others.
  • Coordinate the Confirmation program for youth, including collaboration with the Director of Discipleships and Clergy on curriculum, recruiting and training adult volunteers and mentors, and all other logistical needs.
  • Prepare and maintain a calendar of youth activities to be communicated to the church and community in a timely fashion in collaboration with staff and volunteers. 
  • Maintain consistent and accurate records of all volunteer & youth participation through attendance & communication tracking in our Database
  • Communicate and promote opportunities, events, and ministries within the scope of this position, both within the congregation and the broader community. 
  • Procure and maintain all resources required for effective Youth Ministry, including space, supplies, and materials.
  • Implement Safe Sanctuary policies and procedures in all aspects of ministry.
  • Utilizing a collaborative mission-driven investment approach, develop, implement and manage an annual budget for the ministry to youth and their families which clearly tells the story of Trinity’s investment in youth. 

Faith Formation

  • Select, adapt, and manage age-appropriate curricula based on the church's demographics and emerging possibilities.
  • Provide age-appropriate, diverse, innovative, and ongoing opportunities for youth and families to grow and mature in their faith through church ministries.
  • Lead innovative, fun, and engaging Sunday morning and Sunday night programs for youth.
  • Recognize, develop, celebrate, and manage all milestones of life and faith for Trinity’s youth. 
  • Offer pastoral care and support to youth and their families.
  • Invest in youth relationally by celebrating their achievements and attending extracurricular activities such as sporting events, performances, etc. 

Team Leadership

  • Serve as the Staff Lead for the Youth Ministry committee, requiring proactive and detailed recruiting, leading, and guiding through regular meetings.
  • Develop, empower, and support a team of adult volunteers who will guide youth in all aspects of our ministries.
  • Develop and nurture youth leadership with the intent that youth are able to be in ministry to one another and those younger than them.
  • Recruit, supervise, and intentionally guide Youth Ministry Interns as they lead and learn in a ministry setting with the internship being a vital milestone in Trinity’s ministry to youth and their families. 

Collaboration

  • Collaborate closely with Trinity's Ministries team to create whole-church ministry opportunities for youth and their families.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings, monthly ministry meetings, scheduled Church Council meetings, and other meetings as needed to communicate Youth Ministry needs to others on staff and in leadership. 
  • Collaborate with the Director of Discipleship to provide opportunities for parent encouragement and support.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Missions and Justice to provide youth and their families with local, regional, and international mission opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Ministries Team for large church and community events such as Fall Carnival, Easter Eggstravaganza, and other seasonal efforts.
  • Network with Huntsville area Directors of Youth Ministry and the North Alabama conference to broaden and enhance our ministry to youth and their families.
  • Participate in all trainings required by the Employee Policy Manual (e.g. Safe Sanctuary).

Job Requirements
Qualifications and Experience:
Master’s degree in Christian Education and/or Youth Ministry, preferred.
Bachelor's degree with an understanding of human development, or equivalent experience.
Minimum of five years relevant experience working directly with youth, preferred.
Strategic planning skills that involve the knowledge and foresight to bring a project to fruition and ensure long-term needs are adequately addressed by programming. 
Budgeting skills that include developing, managing and reporting performance.
Commitment to Jesus Christ and the desire and ability to foster faith development in others, particularly youth and their families. 
Commitment to the theology and teachings of the United Methodist Church.
Energetic leadership with strong relational skills with both youth and adults.
Administrative and communication skills to manage a multi-faceted program in a large church setting.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including online. 
Ability to pass a background check screening.

Ability to work on feet for up to three hours at a time, set up tables and chairs, lift up to 45 pounds, and participate in indoor and outdoor activities.
Ability to participate directly in youth programming – e.g., playing games, doing outdoor activities, and sleeping in ad hoc settings like school gyms, tents, cabins, etc.

Additional Job Details

Work Schedule:

40 hours per week, requiring Sunday mornings and evenings and throughout the week for various meetings and collaborations. Otherwise, flexible schedule throughout the week to accommodate for relational ministry and special events needs, which may require evening and weekend hours.
