Job Description

Episcopal Divinity School (EDS) is committed to providing transformative, robust, accessible opportunities for justice-focused theological education for the leaders of today's church. As the landscape of theological education continues to shift, EDS is actively exploring how to pursue its mission outside the boundaries of accredited graduate education.

To that end, EDS seeks a Director of Theological Education (DTE) to collaboratively build and directly oversee its educational initiatives and scholar relationships. The DTE will manage the planning process of educational programs from high-level design that ensures coherence, sustainability, and adherence to EDS values to day-to-day execution with assistance from support staff. Additionally, the DTE will help design and manage pathways for EDS to support scholars engaged in significant, timely work at the intersection of theology and social justice.

The role combines strategic program design and development with detail-oriented execution. It involves high levels of collaboration with EDS leadership and proactive networking and relationship building with instructors and partners.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Develop and refine structure for EDS educational offerings, including courses, cohorts, and online events
  • Recruit instructors to teach and work with them to develop EDS courses
  • Establish model for EDS to support scholars (e.g. visiting scholars or fellowship cohorts) and oversee those programs
  • Establish key characteristics of educational offerings, informed by EDS history and values, and ensure consistency across offerings
  • Work with the Executive Director and President & Dean to discern possible partnerships with theological education institutions, judicatories, and community organizations with the goal of sharing resources to meet the educational and formational needs of local communities
  • Evaluate programs guided by key questions and strategic goals
  • Oversee program support staff

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Passion for theological education
  • Commitment to the work of social justice
  • Strategic vision for translating EDS's values into programmatic practices
  • A skilled and thoughtful approach to pedagogy
  • Adaptability in responding to evolving institutional and educational needs
  • Experience building programs or initiatives strategically and methodically
  • Ability to lead and participate in collaborative planning processes
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working successfully in a remote environment
  • Ability to chart a new path while honoring institutional history and values
  • Active engagement in their academic field(s)
  • Familiarity with The Episcopal Church and its partner institutions

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in theology or closely related field required, DMin or PhD preferred
  • Established connections within field of theological education and/or closely related academic disciplines

About the position:

  • Remote, with occasional travel required
  • Salary 100-120K

To apply:

Submit resume and cover letter describing the candidate's interest in EDS, as well as a short reflection (1-2 paragraphs) on the changing nature of theological education and opportunities for creativity and innovation to careers@eds.edu.
