Description

Westminster Canterbury Richmond is looking for a Director of Pastoral Care to serve as an executive leader and senior minister of the corporation.  We are looking for a dynamic and inspirational leader to provide strategic leadership, direction and oversight for all ministry and programming of the Pastoral Care department on our vibrant, diverse campus.  

 

Westminster Canterbury Richmond was established in 1975 by the Episcopal and Presbyterian churches and, while now interfaith, remains deeply rooted in our spiritual beginnings.  Qualified applicants should have a Master of Divinity with preferred ordination by Presbyterian or Episcopalian denomination.

 

The Director leads a pastoral care team of 5 to provide comprehensive programing and ministry to our community of 900 residents and 650 team members in a compassionate, holistic manner, supporting individuals from diverse cultural and faith traditions.  Meaningful worship, attentive pastoral care, and robust programming are hallmarks of the Pastoral Care Department.

 

This full-time, executive leadership position works onsite on our beautiful award-winning campus in Richmond, Virginia.  Our Continuing Care Retirement Community is situated on a beautiful, 60-acre campus and is committed to nourishing the mind, body and spirit of our residents.

 

The Director serves on a rotating basis as Chaplain on Call, providing after hours and/or weekend support, and participates in holiday rotation among chaplaincy staff.

Requirements

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES/ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Oversee administration of pastoral care operations, including review and evaluation of results of program activities related to pastoral care, education, worship and spiritual educational programming
  • Incorporate pastoral care into the organizational life of the community while serving as an advisor on ethical issues and conflict to the executive leaders of the organization
  • Support individuals from diverse cultural and faith traditions to ensure residents feel supported and nurtured in their faith journey
  • Provide pastoral care support for staff in times of stress
  • Provide leadership in the diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging initiatives on campus
  • Assist families with end-of-life issues and challenges that present to assist with creating an opportunity for unity and reconciliation during the dying and grieving process
  • Interview, hire, supervise, coach, evaluate, discipline and assist employees in setting and meeting performance goals; develop and manage performance and responsibilities of assigned staff while monitoring staffing patterns and identifying opportunities for staff development within division
  • Proactively monitor performance management throughout division to ensure recruitment, retention, compensation, development, discipline and termination processes are implemented fairly and equitably following established processes, policies and procedures to comply with federal and state laws and regulations
  • Oversee annual capital and operating budget preparation for the division programs and ensure related statistical and budget variance reports are completed while monitoring budgetary compliance of the division throughout the year
  • Provide executive leadership and participate in strategic planning, corporate and foundation board meetings and support resident committee leadership
  • Promote community relations, attend and present at local and regional meetings for pastoral care education, preaching, and aging issues as well as to promote the organization. Maintain a working, engaged relationship with the Diocesan Office and Presbytery Office
  • Serve on a rotating basis as Chaplain on Call providing after hours and/or weekend support
  • Participate in holiday rotation among chaplaincy staff

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to sit, reach, stand, bend, walk for periods of time depending on daily responsibilities

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:

  • Ability to provide consultation, leadership, instruction and supervision to individuals in clinical pastoral education
  • Skilled in crisis intervention, pastoral care and spiritual assessment
  • Experience with providing leadership and consultation in high stress situations, including end of life issues and death and dying
  • Theologically sound and inspiring public speaking, preaching and teaching skills geared with relevance towards various audiences, including a corporate board
  • Strong interpersonal and listening skills with a desire to help others and the ability to be assertive with compassion
  • Ability to interpret, communicate and implement policies, procedures, regulations, financial records, reports, etc. to all constituencies
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures, etc. necessary to provide quality services and maintain sound business operations
  • Demonstrated competency in financial management, leadership in an interdisciplinary environment, systems-thinking and effective written and verbal communication skills

 

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:

  • Understanding and knowledge of regulations in a long-term care or assisted living setting

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited undergraduate program
  • Master of Divinity with preferred ordination by Presbyterian or Episcopalian denomination
  • Graduate training in pastoral care
  • Three to five years’ experience as a pastor or in a related ministry position
  • Five to eight years management experience

 

DESIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in a healthcare or a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC)
  • Executive level leadership experience
