ASSISTANT FARM MANAGER (Part Time)

The Assistant Farm Manager (AFM) is responsible for assisting the Farm Manager in the total operation of Cascade Urban Farm. The AFM is responsible for maintaining a continuous availability of fresh produce. The AFM will assist the Farm Manager with planning and managing all aspects of the Cascade Urban Farm food production including growing organic vegetables, fruits, and herbs; managing volunteers; and coordinating food distribution. Cascade Urban Farm is a long-term commitment to growing the farm’s community reach and impact. This position requires a strong, practical knowledge of regenerative agricultural practices and farm management, and a passionate commitment to providing foods for people experiencing food insecurity.

Position is required to work two days during the week with a mandatory Saturday.

Key Requirements:

▪ Assists the Farm Manger with supervision of interns and volunteers

▪ Coordination with Farm Manager, EBC staff and its advisory team for reporting progress and delivering service to targeted community

▪ Assists the Farm Manger with annual field plans

▪ Maintain standards of production to ensure the highest quality produce

▪ Maintain farm infrastructure and landscape with the help of interns and volunteers

▪ Assists the Farm Manger with seed ordering and material acquisition

▪ Assists the Farm Manger with planning and implementation of weekly planting schedule

▪ Assists the Farm Manger with insect and weed control, fertility monitoring and general field observation ▪ Assists the Farm Manger with cultivation activities

▪ Assists the Farm Manger with irrigation planning and implementation

▪ Assists the Farm Manger with soil building program including composting

▪ Assists the Farm Manger with planning a weekly harvest schedule, harvest, and delivery of produce

▪ Assists the Farm Manger with planning for long-term development an interaction with other EBC programs

▪ Some evening or special event hours may be required

▪ Excellent interpersonal skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

▪ Current driver’s license and a clean driving record

▪ Skilled in driving a truck and operating farm equipment

▪ Experience working in a team environment with proven leadership skills

▪ Must be able to work extensively in the field and do vigorous repetitive physical work (bending, lifting, stooping, walking, standing)

▪ Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds

▪ Demonstrated ability to work independently

▪ Demonstrated good organizational and record keeping skills

▪ Minimum two years of experience of full-season management

▪ Demonstrated farm planning experience and working knowledge of farm infrastructure

▪ Experience in growing using natural, organic and regenerative principles

▪ Basic carpentry skills

▪ Demonstrated good communication skills

▪ Self-motivated, cooperative, and flexible

▪ Responsibly manage administrative and record keeping tasks related to running the farm business and overall success of the organization

Required Qualifications

Expressed familiarity with sustainable, organic farming practices

General experience in vegetable farming or agricultural work and basic landscape knowledge

Ability to operate basic farm equipment and troubleshoot basic mechanical issues

Must have the stamina to handle the physical demands of farm work (lifting, standing, bending, etc.)

Good organizational, record-keeping and strong communication skills

Teamwork abilities with experience managing groups/volunteers during community-oriented projects

Adhere to a set part-time work schedule (as determined by the farm manager)

Handle work adjustments with flexibility

Available to work on Saturdays 8-1pm (Required)

Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions

Able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, from fieldwork to customer interactions

Passionate about sustainable agriculture and local food systems

Ready to learn and grow in a hands-on farm environment

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding farm plans and leadership discussions

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $18.00 per hour

Expected hours: 18 – 23 per week

Schedule:

  • 4 hour shift
  • 8 hour shift
  • Weekends as needed

Experience:

  • Farming: 2 years (Required)
  • Farm Mechanical Equipment: 2 years (Required)
